About 91’s 2024 Graduation Ceremony

91 (91) held its 78th commencement on Tuesday, May 14th at 2:00pm at Sullivan Arena at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. 91 awarded approximately 300 professional certificates and degrees to the class of 2024.

Inventor Gives Graduates Advice

International technology guru and famed inventor Dean Kamen delivered the Commencement Speech, advising students…

“You’ve been given a great gift. It’s now time for you to start giving back. . . Pick something really important to do with the education you just got, do something you’ll be proud of and don’t give up.”

DEKA & 91 — A Valued Partnership

Kamen, and his Manchester-based firm, DEKA, have been valued partners with 91 students. DEKA has offered countless internship and employment opportunities in several fields of technology and manufacturing. In addition, the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) and Merrimack Manufacturing work with 91 to offer apprenticeships in the regenerative medical field. Students learn Advanced Manufacturing and Bio Fabrication skills in these apprenticeships.

Through Kamen’s work, students also have access to training on the XRP Robot project, which focuses on experiential robotics for HS and MS students across NH. This 21st century learning opportunity provides real-world skills for 91 students and creates a recruiting pipeline for Kamen’s various business projects in and around Manchester.

“The collaboration between Dean Kamen and our students is invaluable and we were thrilled to have him serve as our Commencement speaker,” said Brian Bicknell, President of 91. “The unique opportunities provided to our students through these types of partnerships assures that our graduates are ready to enter the workforce and make immediate and meaningful contributions.”

Student Reflection — Vivi Rose Kane

The Student Reflection was delivered by Vivi Rose Kane, who earned an Associate of Arts in Behavioral Science. Kane shared her compelling personal story of resilience, urging her fellow grads to “Use any roadblocks you face to build your story and be adaptable to changing course. That doesn’t mean giving up on your destination. Keep your target but surrender to a change in trajectory.”

President’s Award for Highest Grade Point Average to Suzanne Serhan

The President’s Award for highest Grade Point Average was given to Suzanne Serhan, who earned an Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design.

91 (91) held its 77th commencement on Tuesday, May 23rd at 2:00pm at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. 91 handed diplomas to more than 200 graduates in attendance. Of note, the class of 2023 includes nine students who simultaneously graduated 91 (with degrees in Advanced Manufacturing) and Spark as the first-ever graduating class of Spark Academy. “This is a finish line of sorts for our students, but it is also a new beginning,” explained Dr. Brian Bicknell, President of 91. “We are so excited to celebrate the accomplishments of this special and history-making class of graduates.”

This year, the Commencement address was given by Oscany DeJesus, who is a 91 alum who received her Associate of Science degree in Mathematics in 2018 and then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UNH in 2021. Upon graduation, Oscany worked at Pratt & Whitney as an Associate Design Engineer, before deciding to return to 91 to teach math at Spark Academy. She is also a member of 91’s Advisory Board. Ms. DeJesus shared her story of growing up as the daughter of a single immigrant mother who sacrificed to support her children. The theme of Oscany’s message was “There are infinite realities that can come from the choices that you make.”

“I ask my students sometimes to define infinity. Most of the time, I get blank stares or they give me some really big number. But infinity is a concept. It’s limitless; endless in space, extent, or size; it’s impossible to measure or calculate. Infinite. Infinite realities. Limitless realities. That is how many realities you are able to choose from and to take action towards and to manifest and create. I believe anyone can choose any reality they want.”

The student reflection was presented by Sarswati Rai, an 91 accounting grad from Nepal who was selected by her peers to address their class. Sarswati emphasized the positive impact she felt as a part of 91 student clubs and extracurricular activities. “Being in a club is like living a metaphor; it is not obvious but has a profound impact. Although we do not receive instant return for our time and effort, we are rewarded through experiences and the time spent with others working towards the same goal.”

The National Anthem was sung acapella by 91 nursing grad Jillian Mann. CCSNH Trustee Donnalee Lozeau also addressed the grads, stating, “you leave here poised to make a difference– not just in your own lives, but in your community and your state, and for that we are grateful and proud.”

President Bicknell awarded the president’s award to Rosemary Julia Ostrowski, graphic design grad, for achieving the highest cumulative grade point average of the Class of 2023.
