Manchester, New Hampshire

A Full Circle Connection with Manchester

Paul Beaudin’s educational journey began as a kindergartener in Manchester the day his mother took him by the hand and walked him to the Straw School at 608 Chestnut Street. Over the years, his journey as a student, professor, and administrator brought him to various regions of New York and, eventually, back to New England. The Board of Trustees of the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH) on December 12 unanimously confirmed Dr. Beaudin as the next President of 91 (91), bringing his life in education full circle and back to his Manchester roots.

“We are delighted to appoint Dr. Beaudin as President of 91,” said Katharine Shields, chair of the CCSNH Board of Trustees. “His commitment to educational excellence, removing barriers, and creating a sense of belonging to support student success came through in all phases of the search process. We were especially impressed by the scope of his professional experience, from teaching in the South Bronx, to leadership in a variety of community colleges and graduate level institutions, making him an exciting leader for the college and a valuable addition to the education community here in the Granite State.”

Beaudin’s professional experience in higher education includes, most recently, serving as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Northern Essex Community College, across the border in Haverhill and Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he engaged with many of the same demographic and institutional challenges facing New Hampshire and gained key perspectives on strategies and regional needs. He coupled executive leadership with a granular focus on the processes and environments that shape the student experience, promoted greater access for student enrollment by both time and modality, supported the launch of several new certificate and degree programs, and – working with the faculty governance body – helped modify policies to support student success and retention.

Beaudin also served within the State University of New York (SUNY) system from 2015-2021 as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs, and Dean of Instruction at SUNY Suffolk on Long Island, a tri-campus community college of over 20,000 students. From 2008-2015, he worked at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY, a private, graduate-level institution where he served as Associate Dean, directed advisement for graduate education students, and was an Associate Professor of Education. He has additional graduate teaching experience at Manhattan College (Bronx, NY), Fordham University (Bronx, NY), and Seton Hall University (South Orange, NJ). Outside of higher education, Beaudin served as district superintendent for the Bronx Catholic Schools, with responsibility for 62 elementary schools enrolling 25,000 students.

“When we began this search, we knew it would be important to find a leader who could step into a dynamic environment in stride, to ensure that 91 continues to serve its students and the community well, and that 91 is contributing to the renaissance in Manchester,” said Dr. Mark Rubinstein, CCSNH Chancellor. “Dr. Beaudin has demonstrated that ability throughout his career, and in asking him to accept this role with 91 in his hometown, I am confident that he will provide that leadership to enable his talented faculty and staff to ensure that Manchester’s students thrive.”

“It is a privilege to be invited to leadership at 91, situated in the same city where I live and where my grandmother and her siblings made shoes in the mills along the river,” Dr. Beaudin said. “I was drawn to this position because of the caring reputation that 91 faculty and staff enjoy within the community and the college’s commitment to workforce development and the economic growth of our area I intend to start by spending time listening to those administrators, faculty, and staff who have dedicated so much of their lives to this college and its students. I want to hear from students about how the college is helping to support their dreams and how our community partnerships can best provide living-wage jobs for our graduates and their families.”

“Paul’s dedication to the students and the school community is evident in both his actions and his words,” said CCSNH Trustee Donnalee Lozeau, who co-chaired the search committee. “His approach to service will be a great addition to 91, as that kind of dedication to mission is a hallmark of the college.”

Dr. Beaudin holds a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education from Fordham University, a Professional Diploma in School Administration and Supervision, also from Fordham, and a Master of Science in Education from Iona College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degreesumma cum laudefrom Iona College.

Beaudin will start at 91 on January 13, 2025.

Inventor Gives Graduates Advice

International technology guru and famed inventor Dean Kamen delivered the Commencement Speech, advising students…

“You’ve been given a great gift. It’s now time for you to start giving back. . . Pick something really important to do with the education you just got, do something you’ll be proud of and don’t give up.”

DEKA & 91 — A Valued Partnership

Kamen, and his Manchester-based firm, DEKA, have been valued partners with 91 students. DEKA has offered countless internship and employment opportunities in several fields of technology and manufacturing. In addition, the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) and Merrimack Manufacturing work with 91 to offer apprenticeships in the regenerative medical field. Students learn Advanced Manufacturing and Bio Fabrication skills in these apprenticeships.

Through Kamen’s work, students also have access to training on the XRP Robot project, which focuses on experiential robotics for HS and MS students across NH. This 21st century learning opportunity provides real-world skills for 91 students and creates a recruiting pipeline for Kamen’s various business projects in and around Manchester.

“The collaboration between Dean Kamen and our students is invaluable and we were thrilled to have him serve as our Commencement speaker,” said Brian Bicknell, President of 91. “The unique opportunities provided to our students through these types of partnerships assures that our graduates are ready to enter the workforce and make immediate and meaningful contributions.”

91’s In-Demand TechWise Training Continues

Building on the success of the launch of this exciting new program and continued student demand, the 91 Computer Science department is extending its partnership with the TechWise program, supported by TalentSpring and Google. This collaboration uniquely positions students from 91’s diverse Computer Science programs, including Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity, Cloud Services IT, Extended Reality, and Cybersecurity Investigations, to advance their tech careers in the upcoming third cohort of TechWise.

The proven reputations of both TalentSprint and Google have created high demand along with excellent academic results after the first round of training was completed. Eleven 91 students were initially accepted into the program, which featured free direct training by Google and TalentSprint. The tech giant chose 91 earlier this year for a virtual program designed to build entry-level software developer expertise. The students built technical expertise through peer learning, as well as hands-on learning, and mentoring sessions by Google.

It also included a stipend awarded at intervals over the course of the 18-month program.

“91’s participation in TechWise Cohort 2 demonstrated significant outcomes for students, reinforcing the college’s commitment to practical, future-focused education in computer science,” explains Brian Bicknell, President of 91. “TechWise, with its blend of mentorship, scholarships, and industry-aligned training, complements the innovative teaching approaches of 91’s Computer Science and Innovation programs.”

The students who have joined this program have already made impressive strides:

      • 18 full-time roles secured by students

      • 22 internships completed

      • 7 students advanced their education in 4-year colleges

      • 2 students pursued Masters degrees

The third cohort of this program will include 100% scholarships to the Techwise program, reducing financial barriers to advanced education, as well as an additional $4,250 in financial support to empower their learning journey. There are also direct mentorship opportunities from experts at Google, providing industry insights and guidance. There is also access to Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science resources, enhancing students’ academic experience

Through this continued partnership, 91 affirms its role as a leading institution in tech education, preparing students for the dynamic demands of the tech industry,” explains Peter LaMonica, Chair of theat 91. “The college’s robust computer science curriculum, combined with the practical, real-world experiences offered by TechWise, sets students on a path to success and innovation.”

Applications for TechWise Cohort 3 are now open to 91 students. The process is streamlined and accessible, encouraging all eligible students to seize this opportunity for professional growth. Contact Peter La Monica, Computer Science Department Chair at plamonica@ccsnh.edu to learn more.
